Montgomery, OH.-Betty K. Haggerty 99, of Montgomery, OH and Terre Haute,
IN went home to Glory on January 9th. She was born May 1, 1921 the daughter of
Della and Willie Sutton Of Madisonville, KY she and the family came to Terre
Haute when she was a child.
She graduated from Wiley High School and after marrying a career army officer,
traveled the U.S. and the world as a military wife and mother. She was first
inspired to paint fine art by artists in Paris France during a visit there in the early
1950's. She studied under Juanita Castle, a student of Grant Wood, with the Fine
Arts Division of Special Services for military personnel and families, while living
in Anchorage, Alaska. Her subjects were mainly landscapes and skyscapes. She
had eight solo exhibits, including the Swope Art Museum in Terre Haute, Indiana
and many of her works are part of the permanent collection of the Art Department
at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. Other of her paintings are in private
collections around the country.
Survivors include two sons, Dennis Estell of Cincinnati, OH, Phillip Estell of
Waianae, HI; five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and several nieces and
nephews who have all been blessed by her love, Bible knowledge and her
devotion to God and family.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands, James Estell and Anser
Haggerty; two brothers, Welborne and Louis Sutton and one sister, Modestine Guy.
A family only graveside service will be held at Mt. Moriah Cemetery in Withamsville,
OH on Friday January 15th. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to Thru
