Carmella Jo Fugate, a fierce leader, devoted wife, and the irreplaceable rock of her family, passed away peacefully on September 22nd, 2026, at the age of 60, surrounded by the family she loved so deeply.

Carmella was a woman of rare balance-funny, confident, and unapologetically assertive, yet profoundly caring, feminine, and inspiring. To her family, she was the anchor who kept everyone on task, the keeper of the best advice, and the brilliant mind who everyone leaned on for anything they needed. Nobody loved Christmas more than Carmella; it was her absolute favorite holiday. She poured her heart into buying every single gift, ensuring her home was wrapped in the same warmth and magic she gave to her family every day.

Her natural leadership extended far into her community and career. Since 2006, she served with pride as a valued member of the Auxiliary for the American Legion, guiding others with her signature strength. Professionally, Carmella dedicated over 25 years of her life as a non-attorney representative, specializing in Social Security Disability cases. She was a tireless advocate for the vulnerable, a passion highlighted by her recent triumph in winning a complex case she had fiercely fought for over ten years. To Carmella, her work wasn't just a career-it was a calling to bring justice and relief to those who needed it most.

She leaves behind a legacy of love, strength, and unwavering dedication. Carmella is survived by her beloved husband, Delbert Fugate; her parents, Dave and Lilly Sampson; her brothers David and Brian; her cherished children; JD, Monica, Ian, Ben, and Casey; as well as her grandchildren Mollie, Madison, Matthew, Macy, Cooper, Eliana, Juniper, two more that are on their way; and a great grandson, Xavier. She also has a community of friends, colleagues, and extended family members who are now better having known her.

She taught her family how to be strong, how to lead with confidence, and how to love without reservation. Though she is no longer with us, the foundation she built for her family will stand forever.

Join us at Evans Funeral Home in Milford on Monday, September 28th from 9:30am-11am for a visitation. The service will begin at 11 AM, followed by riding to Greenlawn Cemetery for the burial.

Instead of flowers, Carmella would have preferred a donation to be made to The American Legion Post 450 Auxiliary.
