Donald Gene Whitney (“Big Don”), age 61, passed away peacefully on March 25, 2025, after a long and courageous battle with COPD—just as he wanted, with peace and dignity.
Born on June 18, 1963, Don was the beloved son of Robert and Dorothy Whitney. He grew up in Goshen, Ohio, where he attended Goshen High School and Live Oaks. He dedicated over 30 years of his life to serving others as a cardiac monitor technician at Mercy Hospital, where his diligence and strong work ethic made a lasting impact.
Don was a man of deep faith and rich passions. He found his greatest joy in music, especially within the church community. As a talented guitarist and bassist, he played in several church bands and was known to sprinkle in a few flashy tricks when it was time to “rock out”. Whether strumming worship songs or lifting the spirits of others with his playing, Don’s music was a gift he shared generously.
Outside of music, Don had a lifelong love of weightlifting, karate, and baseball—always looking to break his previous records and create a new story to tell. He was a man of strength, both physical and spiritual. He also loved dogs, and will be laid to rest with his good buddy, Racer.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Dorothy Whitney. He is survived by his loving wife Kim; his son Doug and daughter-in-law Stefanie; and his treasured grandsons, Isaac and Lucas. Don is also survived by his twin sister Donna, his younger brother Dan, numerous aunts and uncles, and many cousins who will deeply miss his presence.
Family and friends are invited to a visitation on Sunday, March 30, 2025, from 12:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Evans Funeral Home in Milford, Ohio, with a funeral service to follow at the same location.
