It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Dr. Patsy Ruth Sumner, a loving and devoted teacher who dedicated her life to educating and inspiring others. Patsy was born on December 3, 1929, in Cincinnati, OH, to the late Floyd and Hilda (nee Schaufert) Sumner, and peacefully passed away on October 6, 2024, in Cathedral City, CA, at the age of 94.


Throughout her life, Patsy exuded a deep love for her family, always striving to provide support and encouragement for their success. She had a passion for literature, which she shared with her students while teaching British Literature at Northern Virginia Community College for over 30 years. Her dedication to education was unwavering, always pushing her students to reach their full potential and achieve greatness.


Patsy's love for her country was reflected in her service in the Army as a Corporal from June 8, 1949, until her honorable discharge on November 19, 1952. Her patriotism was steadfast, and she continued to support her fellow veterans throughout her life.


She pursued her academic goals diligently, earning a Bachelor of Arts from The George Washington University in 1955, followed by a Master of Arts from New York University in 1960. Her academic journey culminated in a Doctor of Education from The George Washington University in 1975, showcasing her commitment to lifelong learning.


In addition to her passion for teaching and learning, Patsy enjoyed shopping, loved her animals, and found joy in the simple pleasures of life.


A graveside service will be held to celebrate Patsy's life on Friday, October 18, 2024, beginning at 2:00 PM at Greenlawn Cemetery - 687A US-50, Milford, OH 45150.
