Obituary for Gary Ashby Hawkes
Gary Ashby Hawkes, age 84, passed away on March 27, 2026.
Born in Covington, Kentucky, Gary made his home in Loveland, Ohio, where he built a life centered on family, hard work, and simple joys. He was a devoted husband to Patricia (Pat) Hawkes, his beloved wife of 51 years. Gary was preceded in death by Pat, and their enduring love remains a lasting part of his story. Patty will always be the love of his life.
He is survived by his two sons, Brent Hawkes (Angie) and Jeff Hawkes (Stephanie), and his grandsons, Maxwell and Zachary Hawkes, who brought him great pride and joy.
Gary was a dedicated family man who cherished time spent with those he loved most. Some of his favorite moments were riding motorcycles with his boys, camping with Pat, and playing cards with his sons, Mike, Dick, Sarah, and close friends. His warmth, steady presence, and sense of humor made him someone people naturally gathered around.
He earned his Bachelor’s degree in Business from the University of Cincinnati and Otterbein College. Gary spent more than twenty years working for the U.S. Playing Card Company, demonstrating a strong work ethic and commitment throughout his career. Later, he found his greatest professional joy in owning and operating three Subway franchises alongside his wife and sons—a venture that reflected both his entrepreneurial spirit and his love of working side by side with family.
Gary was also an avid fan of University of Cincinnati basketball and the Cincinnati Reds, rarely missing a chance to cheer on his teams.
Gary will be remembered for his devotion to his family, his hardworking nature, and the many memories he created with those he loved. His legacy lives on in the lives of his sons and grandsons, and in the countless moments shared with family and friends.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Gary’s memory to the charity of your choice.
