Gregory "Gus" Dean Thompson died on Saturday, May 25, 2024 at his home, two days before his 75th birthday. He was born on May 27, 1949 at Our Lady of Mercy Hospital in Mariemont, Ohio. He and his older brother, Michael, were raised in Blanchester by their mother, Mary Elizabeth (nee Sams) and her husband Lionel "Bones" Fitzgerald.
Gus married Linda Williamson on April 30, 1976. They have 3 children; Eric (Julie) Thompson, Chase (Michelle) Thompson and Blair (Brandon) Leedy. Gus and Linda have 7 grandchildren; Celeste and Sawyer Thompson, Lexie Aytes, Ella, Landon and Chloe Thompson and Ruth Leedy. Gus was very proud of the fine men his sons and the fine woman his daughter all grew up to become. He cherished each grandchild.
Gus retired from the Ohio Department of Transportation as a construction project inspector. After retirement he worked several years for a consulting company contracted by O.D.O.T. continuing as a project inspector.
Gus, Linda and their children were active members of Grace Methodist Church in Blanchester. Gus was a trustee for several years at the church. He co-coached with Jim Johnson their sons Eric and Matt on the famous TJ's knothole ball team. Gus coached Eric, Chase and Blair on their basketball teams and was the Blanchester High School Freshman Basketball coach for seven years.
He was also involved with Cub Scouts Troop #45 and Boy Scouts Troop #47, helping Eric and Chase become Eagle Scouts.
Gus was athletic and competitive. He loved playing golf with his friends and family. As part of a foursome with Jim Johnson, Harry Brumbaugh and Russ Monjar. One perfect day, Gus was present to witness Harry's hole-in-one. Gus was an avid card player. He belonged to a monthly poker group for approx. 38 years that still meets. Gus loved most playing cards with children and grandchildren.
Gus was preceded in death by his mother Mary, father Jesse Frank Thompson, step-fathers Bones and Paul "Hank" Williams.
Gus is survived by his niece Mandy (Jon) Edwards and great-nephews Cade and Michael Edwards, step-sister Patty Williams and his sisters-in-law Donna (Rick) Clevenger, Janet (Larry) Florea and their families that were very special to him. He is also survived and loved by the Sams, Dowler, Tooheys and Cochran families.
The family will receive friends at the Grace Methodist Church, 201 E Center Street, Blanchester, OH 45107, on Monday, June 3rd from 6-8 PM. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at the church beginning at 10AM with the burial following at Blanchester IOOF Cemetery.
