Helen Martha Prather

Sadly we announce the passing of Helen (Helena) Martha Schulz Prather, mother, grandmother, and teacher on August 22, 2024. Helen was born May 22, 1946, in Amityville, New York, to her late parents, Werner and Martha Schulz.

For Helen growing up in Hicksville, NY allowed her take the train to NYC to explore the Library, Museums, or see a Broadway Show. She rode her bike everywhere including to play baseball with neighborhood friends, visits with her Nieces and Nephews, Saturday movies, even to Jones Beach. Helen moved to Cincinnati for college and became a REDS baseball fan.

Helen dedicated over 30 years to teaching elementary students and earned a Master's Degree in Education.  She taught 6th Grade for nearly 20 years at Belfast Elementary in the Bright Local School District, Helen was known for taking her 6th Graders to Cincinnati Music Hall for the Nutcracker Ballet each December along with International Week Projects.

After Retiring from Education in 2009, Helen was able to devote herself completely to her grandchildren starting as toddlers to recently having them drive her around . She loved Holiday traditions including baking snickerdoodles,  playing Christmas music earlier every year, backyard Easter egg hunts even if the child was taller than her, a summer grill out complete with homegrown tomatoes, and making sure everyone had a big birthday celebration

She leaves behind her daughter, Pamela (Dan) Peebles, and her grandchildren, Losanta and Judah Peebles, whom she cherished. Helen is also survived by her brother, Carl (Carol) Schulz, and beloved Nieces and Nephews. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Dorothy Greggo.

Helen supported the League for Animal Welfare in Batavia after adopting the 1st cat of her own choosing there several years ago. All her other beloved cats were rescued by her daughter.

A graveside service will be held on Monday, August 26, 2024, at 10:00AM in Greenlawn Cemetery, Milford, where friends and family can come together to share memories. She firmly believed that to be absent in the body was to be present with the Lord.
