Jack Parry Cunkelman

March 30, 1941 — October 14, 2024

Milford and beyond lost a cherished community member on October 14, 2024, with the passing of Jack Parry Cunkelman. Jack was 83 years old.

Born in Irwin, PA, Jack was a man of many talents and passions that endeared him to all who knew him. After graduating in Angola Indiana from Tri-State College (now Trine University), with a BS in electrical engineering, he began his career in broadcast engineering at WLWT. Jack brought innovation and creativity to his work, highlighted by his management of remote broadcasts for the Cincinnati Reds and Cincinnati Bengals. His expertise also shone through in his role as the lead sound engineer for the WEBN Fireworks, bringing the magic of sound to life for countless spectators. Another career highlight was when he was awarded an Emmy for the 1977 Technical Direction of the Phil Donahue Show on the Mississippi Queen.

After 26 years at WLWT, Jack took a chance on his invention of the Talkback Box (used in the announcer's booth at televised sporting events) and started Daltech. His Talkback Boxes became the industry standard and were utilized for numerous events including the Olympics. During this time in his life, he also worked on designing and building television mobile units. People knew and respected his work far and wide and Talkback Boxes are still utilized in announcer's booths today.

Beyond his professional pursuits, Jack found joy in the simple pleasures of life. He found solace in the great outdoors, enjoying many backpacking trips in Canada with his brother and other buddies. He especially enjoyed connecting with his grandkids, exploring their interests and traveling with them. His love for pipe organ music also took him on trips beyond Cincinnati, and as a technical writer, he traveled to Japan as a consultant on the writing of an equipment manual.

Jack's personal interests added depth to his character. He developed a passion for Ham Radio at a young age that kept him connected with friends for many years. His love for his church, Milford Church of God, was evident in his service on the church council and in his contribution of building the church's sound system.

Jack will be lovingly remembered by his family, including his devoted spouse of 60 years, Donna Cunkelman, his daughters Lauranne (Scott)Traister and Amanda (Glenn) George, grandchildren Bailey and Brooklyn and all those whose lives he touched. As we gather to celebrate his life, let us carry forward Jack's spirit of innovation, passion, and community service, keeping his legacy alive in our hearts.

Jack was preceded in death by his grandparents Clarence and Lucy Parry, parents Bert and Dorothy Cunkelman and brother James Cunkelman.
