James (Jim) B. Quatman, 66, passed away after a courageous battle with cancer with family by his side on Friday, May 22, 2020. Born in Lima, Ohio, he was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. As a lifelong educator and man of great faith, he lived his life committed to motivating people to be their best selves, making the best of every situation, and appreciating the many blessings in his life. He was a devout Catholic with deep faith in the promise of eternal life through Jesus. He cared deeply for others and their wellbeing. He was a connector, a passionate educator, and an aficionado of the simple, beautiful moments in everyday life. Perhaps most of all he was a fiercely loyal husband, father, friend and family member.
Jim's career in education spanned over 30 years, entailed many roles from coaching to teaching to administration across the state of Ohio. He was a math teacher and coach at Edison, Crestline, Ashland, Twin Valley South, and Troy High Schools. He served as an assistant principal at Anderson and Turpin High Schools before becoming the principal at Milford High School, and later, assistant superintendent for Milford Schools. After retirement from the public school system he served as the Director of Professional Services at the Southwest Center for Ashland University. He was a cherished mentor and colleague to many.
Jim is survived by his wife of 42 years, Teresa Quatman (nee King), his three daughters Carmen, Catherine (Eric) Yates, and Lauren (David) Teuschler, four grandchildren. He is also survived by his seven siblings Jane Quatman, Pat (Tom) Scullin, Kit (Ken)Weir, Tony (Debbie) Quatman, Hank (Debbie) Quatman, Jon (Ellen) Quatman, and Ed (Paula) Quatman, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and close friends. He was preceded in death by his parents Philip Augustus Quatman and Catherine Goeke, three siblings Phyllis Rainey, Jerry Quatman, Gus Quatman, and niece Carey Gray (nee Rainey). His faith, kindness, and determined spirit was an inspiration to many and will be missed by all. Due to COVID restrictions, there will be a private funeral. His family is planning to hold a Celebration of Life at a later date.
