James Smyth

June 18, 1945 — January 23, 2022

SMYTH, JAMES "TODD" - Devoted husband of Sue Ellen Smyth (nee Gant); Loving father of Mollie (Danny) Casey and the late Jamie Smyth; cherished grandfather of Meagan and Kyle Steltenkamp; dear brother of Susan (Tom) Vieson, Pat (Judy) Smyth, and the late Bobby Jeff Smyth. Todd is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, cousins, and friends.

Most of us know Todd as a servant to others. The needs of others came before his own. He was always there to answer the call and was often there before the call was ever even made. Maybe this call to service came from serving others at the family business, Red's Tavern, or in his days studying with the Oblates in New York. Todd also served our country in the United States Navy during Vietnam. Regardless of the source, service to others was his calling. The only thing that mattered more to Todd was family. He married his High School Sweetheart, Sue, and she was by his side for the next 54 years. The importance of family extended to his daughters, who were at the center of his world. He taught them the value of family, love, and faith. That faith was tested with the death of his oldest daughter, Jamie, but Todd remained steadfast. After a 30-year career as an Engineer with Cincinnati Milacron, Todd had the time to share his talents with those in need. He was an avid photographer, volunteer, and all-around Mr. Fixit. In time, he spent his days imparting his values on the next generation, his grandchildren Meagan and Kyle. To say that he thought the world of them is a great understatement. The same is true of their feelings for him Taking care of them during the day didn't slow down his volunteer efforts, he would just take them along for the ride. His volunteer activities continued for as long as he was physically able to load his trailer with donations, haul his lawnmower to any yard in need, or throw his tool bag into the car. Let's not forget the camera. His camera was an extension of him, and he spent countless hours taking and editing photographs and sharing them with everyone. He spent his final months at Magnolia Springs with Sue, where he continued telling his corny jokes and taking pictures of the friends he was making. That is where he passed away with his wife, daughter, grandchildren, and his sister Susan at his side
