Joan Treadwell (Humbert) Cassidy went home to be with her Lord on December 15, 2019 from Monarch Meadows in Seaman, Ohio.
She was born in Brooklyn, NY on April 12, 1925 to George Joseph Humbert, Sr. and Bess Geneva (Simonson) Humbert, both of Lynbrook, NY.
Joan was raised in Niagara Falls, NY, from where her father served as supervising buildings engineer for the nationwide United Hotel chain.
Following high school, Joan graduated from the University of Rochester, NY and taught art for two years at RIT, Rochester, before marrying Owen Bainbridge Cassidy on August 16, 1947. Their two sons, Owen Michael and Patrick Glendower, were born in Rochester and Baltimore, MD, respectively.
Soon after returning to New York State to establish a medical practice, her husband was diagnosed with Paranoid Schizophrenia and hospitalized permanently. With her father's help, Joan purchased a house in Lynbrook for herself and both boys, and found work, eventually settling into her 34-year career teaching art in grades K - 6 in Franklin Square, NY at Washington Street and Polk Street Schools. Often working two jobs and through the Summer school breaks, she earned her Master's Degree in education as she raised her two sons.
After many years, Joan obtained a divorce and married a high school boyfriend, Arthur Pethybridge of New Jersey. The marriage was unhappy, and did not last long.
With retirement from teaching came the realization of Joan's long held dream of a simpler way of living, when she moved to rural West Virginia with her older son. However, the happiness she sought eluded her. After 30 years, the onset of dementia on her part and mental illness in her son made it necessary to find new homes for both, near her younger son's home in Adams County, Ohio. In spite of the excellent care provided by Fanny Yutzy of Mountain View Adult Care in Winchester, Joan's declining condition necessitated hospitalization in the summer of 2017; but God was working.
While in the hospital, on August 6, 2017, a dear family friend spent two hours with Joan, patiently opening to her the Scripture; and she in turn opened her heart to her Saviour and Lord Jesus Christ. She recovered from near death, but needed more intensive care, and became a resident of newly opened Monarch Meadows, in Seaman, Ohio. There she received outstanding care until her remarkably peaceful Sunday afternoon home going, surrounded by close family (including grandchildren and"great grands.")
According to the Bible, Joan is now in Heaven with her older son, who found Christ as his Saviour a few months before his passing in December 2015. They are with an untold number of relatives, in the presence of their Creator and their Redeemer from sin, death and hell, the Lord Jesus.
What of you, Friend? Have you allowed God's great salvation to become yours? Have you claimed Jesus' death on the cross as God's full payment for your sin? Have you opened the door of your heart to Him who rose from the dead for you?
Joan was preceded in death her parents; one brother, George Joseph Humbert, Jr., Toledo, OH; her husband, Owen Bainbridge Cassidy, Watkins Glen, NY; and her son, Owen Michael Cassidy, Milford, OH.
She is survived by one son: Patrick Glendower Cassidy, (Mary) of Winchester, OH;
Seven grandchildren: Elizabeth (Patrick) Nimeskern, Whitehall, WI; Linda Cassidy, Winchester, OH; Rebekah Cassidy, Osseo, WI; Bethany (Aaron) Hall, Winchester, OH; Deborah (Zachary) Nimeskern, Williamsburg, OH; Charity Cassidy, Winchester, OH and Victoria (Michael) Mowery of North Pole, AK.
Eleven great-grandchildren: Isaiah, Josiah, Brianna and Alissa Nimeskern; Ethan, Judah, Elise and Olivia Hall; Lydia and Miah Nimeskern; and Liberty Mowery.
We thank the good Lord for His mercies!
