Judith B. "Judy" Ruehl (née Bayersdorfer), age 79, passed away peacefully on April 11, 2026, in Cincinnati, Ohio. Born on March 5, 1947, in Cincinnati, Judy lived a life filled with love, learning, and generosity.
Judy earned her master’s in education from the University of Cincinnati and dedicated her career to teaching mathematics within Cincinnati Public Schools. She retired from Cincinnati Public Schools after 26 years of teaching. Her passion for education and commitment to her students left a lasting impact on countless young minds. After retiring, she found immense joy in spending time with her grandchildren and exploring the world through travel. She visited all 50 states and all continents except Antarctica.
Judy was a woman of many talents and interests. She was an accomplished painter, an avid gardener, and a skilled knitter. She loved playing cards and solving crossword puzzles, always challenging herself intellectually. A lover of the outdoors, she enjoyed hiking and found peace in nature’s beauty. A dedicated bridge player, Judy achieved the prestigious rank of Sapphire Life Master—a testament to her skill and passion for the game. She also served as president of the bridge club. Judy enjoyed music and was a supporter of the Cincinnati Symphony for 25 years. She also had beloved pets, including German Shepherds, West Highland Terriers, and many cats. Judy also had a deep appreciation for cooking and preparing meals for family gatherings, especially during Thanksgiving and other holidays when her home became a welcoming haven for loved ones. Her generosity extended beyond her immediate family; she opened her heart and home to friends and family members in need, embodying kindness and compassion throughout her life.
Judy is survived by her husband, Chris King, and her children: Michael Ruehl, Phil (Irene) Ruehl, Jennifer Ruehl, and Jason (Adrienne) Ruehl; as well as her beloved grandchildren: Taylor Ruehl, Sierra Ruehl, Kristine Ruehl, Autumn Ruehl, and Adama Secka. She is also survived by her sister, Estelle (Larry) Smith; sister-in-law, Mary Bayersdorfer; Bernie and Sue Hutzel; Steve and the late Kathy Ruehl; Donna Ruehl; Sharon and Bill Strickland; Dan and Amy Ruehl; Janet and the late Dick Young; Becky and Doug Watercutter; and many cherished friends, neighbors, cousins, nieces, and nephews who held a special place in her heart.
She was predeceased by her parents, Harold and Stella Bayersdorfer (née Odenbach), her brother Kenneth Bayersdorfer, and her sister Barbara Works.
In her final act of generosity, Judy donated her body to science to help others—a reflection of the selflessness that defined her life.
Judy’s memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew her. May those who loved her find comfort in remembering the warmth she brought into their lives. A Celebration of Life will be held on May 25, 2026, from 01:00 PM to 05:00 PM at Peaceful Valley, 1799 Craver Road, Batavia, Ohio 45103.
"In lieu of flowers, the family requests that those who wish to express sympathy consider donating (in Judy’s honor) to either the Arbor Day Foundation-Bootleg Fire Recovery in Oregon or the Charcot-Marie-Tooth Disease Research Foundation.
