Larry to most, Lars to others, he was the ever-present eldest of seven loving siblings. A man of many talents, Larry served also as family historian and photographer, angsty chef de cuisine for every gathering, and general handyman-on-call for mom and sisters. His skills also extended to carpentry, and his knowledge of computers and programming was legendary, going back to the 1970s.
Larry’s commitment to family was the essence of his entire life, along with his faith, his thirst for both acquiring and sharing knowledge, and his love of all animals. He spoiled his pets religiously, and in his final months delighted in caring for and feeding a stray kitty he’d found visiting his rear patio.
Known for his quirky sense of humor, typically STEM-themed novelty T-shirts, and humble but gregarious manner, Larry never met a stranger. A quick call to say hello easily evolved into an hours-long conversation. Although plagued with more than his share of physical challenges much of his life, including eventual partial blindness and loss of both legs due to diabetes, he maintained an uncommonly positive attitude. Family found it ironic that Larry would often comment “I just can’t believe how lucky I am.”
Having graduated from University of Cincinnati in both geology and mathematics, Larry’s professional life was as varied as his interests. However, his most rewarding years were in service to Data Recognition Corporation, where he loved his work leading a team tasked with the meticulous scoring of standardized student tests mandated by a number of states. He had found his groove.
Larry was a truly brilliant individual. He literally did calculus in his head… for fun. He memorized and often recited likely hours of Shakespearean prose and verse, and was always surrounded by an overwhelming but well-organized collection of books, music, and other media. Long-addicted to “Jeopardy”, he would berate himself on the odd occasion when he’d miss a question.
Although possessing boundless potential, Larry lived a simple and modest existence. Again, family was his life. Raised in rural Goshen Ohio, he remained a proud lifelong resident there. His most recent home had a wonderful view of a historic landmark, which had become home to Goshen Historical Society. He had hopes of volunteering there, as his health might allow, but such fortune ultimately did not befall him. In lieu of flowers, family knows that Larry would be most grateful for donations to Goshen Historical Society. goshenhistory.org
