Mary Turpin Gerard Cone April 16, 1924-May 15, 2022 Mary Turpin Gerard Cone passed away peacefully on May 15, 2022 at the age of 98 in Milford, Ohio. Mary will be remembered for her kindness, devotion to her family and love for her country. She was the daughter of Stephen Turpin Gerard and Florence Gooder Gerard of Terrace Park, Ohio. Mary was raised in Terrace Park where she married her high school sweetheart, H. Samuel Cone, on August 9, 1947 at St. Thomas Episcopal Church. They were married for 63 years. Mary and Sam raised their three children in Terrace Park and later Indian Hill. Mary attended the University of Cincinnati and was active in Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. In her youth, Mary spent her summers at Chippewa Trails Camp for girls on Elk Lake in northern Michigan. Her mother was the head counselor. Some of her closest girlfriends were from camp and she remained in contact with them throughout the years. Mary fell in love with Michigan and had a summer residence with Sam on Grand Traverse Bay in Omena, MI. A devoted mother and grandmother, Mary’s greatest joy was spending time with her family and friends and volunteering in her community. She was a Sunday School teacher at St. Thomas Episcopal Church and helped with the Altar Guild. She was a member of the Cincinnati Junior League. She and Sam coordinated the annual Terrace Park Memorial Day Festival and Terrace Park Labor Day Parade. She was also involved with the Omena Traverse Yacht Club. Mary also loved swimming, tennis, golf and cheering on the Cincinnati Reds. Mary is survived by her two children, Stephen Cone (Meg) and daughter Marguerite “Midge” Denker (Randy) and her son-in-law Shelly Mender. She is the cherished grandmother of Alissa Arnold, Kyle Mender, Natalie Mender Slater (Dave), Anna Kakos (Steve), Grace Culver (Kyle) and Samuel Cone. She is blessed with great-grandchildren: Jack, Alex, Annie, Hudson, Margaux, James, Jude, Katherine and Elizabeth. Mary was preceded in death by Sam, her sister Nancy Gerard Ricketts, daughter Mary “Geri” Gerard Mender and granddaughter, Stephanie Gerard Cannon. Mary is a descendant of Edward Johnson Turpin, one of the original founders of Anderson Township. Turpin Hills and Turpin High School are named after Mary’s ancestors. Mary is also a descendant of Christian Waldschmidt, a patriot of the American Revolutionary War, who settled in Camp Dennison. Mary’s memorial service is Saturday, May 21 at St. Thomas Episcopal Church at 10:30 AM in Terrace Park.
