Mary Alice Schutte, beloved wife of Tom Barth, loving step-mother of Elizabeth (Mat) Thacker, Zachary (Amanda) Barth, Jessica (Dan) Hiser and Dylan Barth, step-grandmother of Jacob, Alli and Paisley, daughter of the late Herbert and Alice Schutte, dear sister of Pam (John) Tishaus, Herb (Maryanne) Schutte, Bob (Pattie Bondurant) Schutte, Sandy (Marty) Butler, Susan (Ed) Haushalter, Patty (Peter) Dunphy and Nance (Scott Flint) VonRotz, she is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
Mary grew up as the 6th child of 8, in Milford, Ohio; attending St. Andrew School followed by McNicholas High School. ’72.
After graduating with a math degree from Thomas More College, she worked with the Jesuit Volunteer Corp in Ashland, Montana. There she cared for orphaned Native American children. Upon her return, she took a job at AT&T as a programmer and trainer. It is there that she met her husband, Tom. During these years she became a paramedic, enjoyed yoga, learned the guitar, and received her black belt in karate, while making memories with many of her nieces and nephews.
She was a humble woman of great faith. She touched countless lives throughout the years by her acts of service. She used her talent of sewing to generously hand make hundreds of sleeping bags for the homeless. Mary bought and assembled care packages for the needy, sat with hospice patients, and volunteered on the paramedic squad. She was an active member at St. Andrew Catholic Church and enjoyed working with St. Vincent DePaul and the Bereavement committee. She followed in her father’s footsteps by counting the weekly collection.
In addition to faith, family was the center of her life. When she left her job at AT&T, she devoted her time to caring for her elderly mother, Mema. Mary became the heart of our family. She was always planning activities for the children including card games, tractor rides, Cousin’s camp, vacations, and camping adventures. Her RV, the “Mare Mobile”, ventured throughout the U.S., fueled by the laughter of children. She was the first person on the invite list to every family celebration. Mary always showed up. There wasn’t a task she shied away from; whether it was a paint brush, a chain saw, or a moving truck. Because she graciously opened her home to all, her family jokingly named her home the “Mary-Ott.” Most notably, it was her honor to lead her nieces and nephews in faith by being a Godmother, Confirmation sponsor, and a living example of Christ. She was a simple and joyful woman often seen with a welcoming smile. She respected and accepted everyone and was greatly loved in return. Mary will always be cherished as the biggest heart in our family.
