With heavy hearts, we share the passing of Megan Reckman, a beloved daughter, sister, aunt, niece, cousin, and friend, who left us far too soon. Born on November 2, 1983, Megan was diagnosed at age 4 with Neurofibromatosis Type 1 (NF1), which left her legally blind due to tumors on her optic nerves. Megan underwent chemotherapy and radiation as a child and remained stable for many years. When the disease returned with a vengeance in 2022, Megan faced it with the same fierce determination and bravery that defined her life. Megan never gave up.
Despite all the obstacles Megan faced, Megan lived a rich, full, and meaningful life. Megan earned a degree in Early Childhood Education from Live Oaks and a Business Degree from the University of Cincinnati-an accomplishment Megan took great pride in. Megan worked in early childhood education as well as in retail at Macy's, Dillard's, Toys "R" Us, and Kohl's. For the past 13 years, Megan thrived at Home Depot as a Credit Specialist, earning the nickname "Credit Queen" from her manager and receiving numerous awards for outstanding work.
Megan also poured her heart into causes that mattered. Megan served as the chief fundraiser for the Mark Reckman Scholarship, securing donations in memory of her beloved brother. Megan was an athlete who competed in numerous races, including the Flying Pig, Heart Mini, Queen Bee, and many more-completing her final race in May of this year.
Megan loved swimming, dogs, poetry, reading, and spending time with her friends and family. Megan had a special love for everything Disney, embracing its magic, wonder, and joy with the same wide-eyed enthusiasm Megan brought to life. Megan also had a lucky streak at the casino, especially with the slots, which Megan thoroughly enjoyed.
Throughout her health journey, Megan was surrounded by love and support. One of her dearest friends, Rebecca, stood by Megan's side with unwavering loyalty and care, offering strength, comfort, and steadfast companionship throughout her battle with NF1. Megan's courage was incredible-but it was made even stronger by those who walked beside her.
Megan found joy in life's simple pleasures-meatloaf, Brussels sprouts, and peach ice cream were among her favorites. Those who knew Megan best remember her as beautiful, spunky, fearless, amazing, funny, caring, tenacious, passionate, strong, honest, kind, sweet, diligent, and confident. Megan liked to take charge, light up a room, and bring people together. Megan was truly a gift.
Megan is survived by her loving mother Jeanne Reckman, and her brothers Mike Reckman (Lisa) and Matt Reckman (Christie). Megan was a devoted and much-loved aunt to Parker, Madison (Mitchell Hansbauer), Christopher, Mackenzie, Katie, and Reese. Megan is also survived by her dear aunt Kathy Franklin, and many other aunts, uncles, cousins, and countless friends who were touched by her strength and joy. Megan was preceded in death by her father Ken Reckman and her brother Mark Reckman.
As Mahatma Gandhi once said, "Where there is love, there is life." Megan filled this world with both, and her memory will live on in all who were lucky enough to know and love her.
