It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Melba Rae Hughes, a cherished mother, devoted friend, and passionate volunteer, who departed this life peacefully on May 19, 2026, at the age of 90. Born on February 4, 1936, in Cincinnati, Ohio, to the late William and Lola (nee Stephens) Scully. Melba touched the lives of many with her vibrant spirit and unwavering love.
A woman of many passions, Melba found joy in cooking and sharing delicious meals with her loved ones. She dedicated countless hours to crocheting and crafting alongside her grandchildren, creating lasting memories that they will forever cherish. Her beautiful garden was a sanctuary of color and life, reflecting her nurturing nature. Always brimming with creativity, Melba delighted in decorating her home for every holiday and season, introducing a new theme each year that brought joy to all who visited.
As a volunteer at Mercy Hospitals and the Promont House, Melba selflessly shared her time and kindness, leaving an imprint on the hearts of those she served. Described as loving, caring, fiercely loyal, and wonderfully adventurous, she was a woman with big opinions and an even bigger heart, whose bubbly personality could light up any room.
Melba was the devoted wife of the late Steven Hager Jr. for more than 23 years and later enjoyed 15 years of marriage with the late Ronald Hughes; Loving mother of Steven (Bev) Hager, William (Peggy) Hager, and Theresa (Corbett) Sandlin; Cherished grandmother of 11 and great grandmother of 12.
Along with her husbands and parents, Melba is preceded in death by two sons, Michael and David Hager, and her sister Judith Lynn Scully.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held in her honor at St. Andrew Catholic Church on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, at 10:00 AM. Prior to the Mass, a visitation will take place at Evans Funeral Home in Milford, starting at 9:00 AM. Burial at Batavia Union Cemetery. We invite all who knew and loved Melba to join us in celebrating her beautiful life and the indelible mark she left on our hearts.
The family kindly requests memorial donations to the Hospice of Cincinnati, an organization that provided compassionate care during Melba's final journey.
