Nancy Annette Deerwester, beloved wife, mother, and grandmother went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, July 24th at age of 87. Nancy was born January 8, 1938, in Akron Ohio to Paul Max and Catherine Faye Butler. She graduated from Van Buren High School then earned her nursing degree from Ida Belle Firestone School of Nursing at Akron City Hospital. She married Gary L Deerwester in 1959 and subsequently moved to South Charleston, Ohio, where they raised four children.
Nancy was employed and retired from the former Community Hospital of Springfield, Ohio, where her fondest nursing friendships were formed in the Recovery Room. Along with working and raising her family, Nancy held lifelong and highly developed skills in flower gardening, sewing, quilting, crocheting, knitting and baking cookies and pies. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of South Charleston spanning over 50 years where she had taught Sunday school and remained involved in various Bible study and women’s groups until she could no longer attend.
Nancy will be remembered for her faithfulness -which encompassed all aspects of her life, her excellent work ethic, her sacrificial nature, her humbleness, and genuine sweetness. Nancy always welcomed family and friends to her home where she and Gary held many joy-filled gatherings throughout the years, creating beautiful, lasting memories for their children and grandchildren. Nancy will be deeply missed, but remembered with great love.
Nancy was preceded in death by her parents and her husband of 57 years, Gary.
Her family remains to honor her memory and celebrate her full life. They include her children: Lynne(Bernard)Clark, Karen(Paul) Gartner, Debra(Steven)Myers, David(Sharon)Deerwester. Her grandchildren: Michael(Kevin)Clark,
Catherine(Jake)Anderson, Allison(Michael)O’Brien, Matthew(Sabrina)Clark, Andrew(Laura)Gartner,Jonny Gartner, Adelee Gartner. Jacob Myers, Emily(Matt)Harshman, Julia Myers, Daniel Myers, Jennifer Myers. Caleb(Claire)Deerwester, Elise Deerwester, Sara Deerwester. And her great-grand daughters: Violet, Grace, Shirley, Mabel, Caroline, Lucille. Nancy’s sisters: Susan(Terry)Dufford of Tupelo, MS, Polly(Tom)Roy of Sarasota, FL, and Jane(Pete) Potteiger of Findlay, OH.
A memorial service honoring Nancy will be held at First Presbyterian Church, South Charleston on Friday, August 1, at 11:00am with visiting hours beginning at 10:00am. Interment will be at Ferncliff Cemetery in Springfield. Evans Funeral Home, Milford has been entrusted with the arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of South Charleston, Ohio to support the new Youth Center.
