Robert Winton Barnes

May 10, 1943 — June 10, 2022

Robert (Bob) Winton Barnes passed away on Friday, June 10, 2022 at Bethesda North Hospital following complications from a recent hospital stay. Robert was 79 years young. Robert was born on May 10, 1943, in Batavia, Ohio. He enlisted in the United States Navy and was proud to serve his country from 1960 to1963. His service included a deployment during the Bay of Pigs Crisis. During his time in the navy, he was able to travel through the South Seas, and to Cape Town, South Africa. After his service to the navy as a deckhand, he worked at NuTone Industries for a short time before joining the GE team. Bob got his foot in the door at GE and swept floors. With his hard work ethic and integrity, he was promoted to Production Assembly Mechanic and was team leader earning several accommodations. Bob retired from GE in 2000 after 33 years. Robert will be known most for his giving spirt. His truest form of love was sharing with others what he had: either a joke, wisdom, or something he found at a yard sale that he had to pick up. Robert spent his life serving others and was a founding member of the Men of Seton (church service organization), and was active in the Knights of Columbus. Robert was passionate about fantasy, fiction and comics. He loved Snoopy and Warner Brother Toons. He rejoiced when he found a treasure of a figure to collect of one of his hobbies. When he wasn’t reading or yard selling he enjoyed music or playing bridge. The most epic tale of Robert’s life started when he was living at Canterbury Gardens Apartments. The young bachelor had a few roommates and, luckily for one of the other tenant maidens, a lot of laundry. In the summer of 1967, he met Carolyn Lee Fanell while doing laundry in the apartment’s laundromat. It only took a few short months before they tied the knot. They married on January 27, 1968. They welcomed their first son, Michael 2 years later. Their second son, Jacob joined them 10 years later, in August of 1980. Robert and Carolyn were married for 54 years. They sang in the church choir together, enjoyed watching musicals and plays, and held hands through it all. Robert still opened doors for Carolyn even in 2022. In addition to wife, Carolyn, Robert is survived by his son Jacob and Kami Barnes, grandson Garret MacDonald, and Elizabeth MacDonald, sister Sandra and Paul Thomas, sister Pamela Barnes, and several nieces and nephews. He was proceeded in death by both parents: Edgar and Ethel Barnes; son, Michael Barnes; sister, Cecelia Macintosh.
