Susan P. Leonard

January 28,1956-December 14, 2022.

Susan (Susie) Leonard, age 66, a red headed “Jersey Girl”, passed away peacefully on December 14, 2022 at Sem Haven Health Care Center, Milford, Ohio after a long battle with Parkinson’s Disease and Covid 19. Susie, a devout Catholic, was fully fortified with the sacraments of the Catholic Church. She loved to sing, especially at church. St. Augustine said, “Those who sing pray twice”. Music was a form of prayer for Susie, who sang with much love. Her voice was a gift with which she could make music to the Lord.

Susie was born and raised in Garwood, New Jersey, attended Garwood schools and graduated from David Brearley Regional High School, Kenilworth, New Jersey. She worked in the mailroom at the Union County Courthouse in Elizabeth, New Jersey until she became disabled with Parkinson’s Disease. She never married, never smoked, never drank alcohol and never drove a car. She lived with her loving parents in N.J until she needed to be cared for by her loving sister, Mary Jane DeHanes, in Milford, Ohio. Susie is the beloved daughter of the late Honorable Judge James T. Leonard, Sr. and Anne Leonard of Garwood, N.J., loving sister of the late Patty (Ed) Olenick and brother Jimmy (Kathy) Leonard of Garwood, N.J. She is survived by her devoted sister and caretaker, Mary Jane (Deacon Ken) DeHanes, Milford, Ohio, nieces, nephews, godson’s, cousins, dear friends and Garwood, a town she forever loved. Her favorite restaurant in Garwood, where she dined with her mother every Friday, was Lorenzo’s (Portuguese) owned by identical twin brothers from Portugal. Her favorite sayings were “Age is only a number” and “What’s good for the goose is good for the gander”. Everybody in Garwood loved Susie, who will always be on their hearts and in their prayers. Mass of Christian Burial with Cremains at St Gertrude Church 6543 Miami Ave. Cincinnati, Ohio 45243 on her mother’s birthday, Thursday, February 2, 2023 at 1:00pm. Fr. John Corbett, OP will celebrate the Mass. Internment at a later date in a Catholic cemetery. Lunch immediately following the funeral mass at Ferrari’s Italian Restaurant (down the street from the church) in Susie’s honor. Memorial donations to the Garwood First Aid Squad 401 Second Avenue, Garwood, N.J. 07027, a non-profit, all volunteer first responders ambulance service founded by her father. A final message from Susie: “When you’re alone with Jesus and He sweetly smiles on thee, will you gently whisper to Him a little prayer for me? And when I’m alone with Jesus and all else is hid from view, I’ll gently drop into His heart a little prayer for you.”❤️
